What is HASS?

HASS stands for High Activity Sealed Source. It refers to a radioactive source in which the radiation-emitting material is permanently enclosed within a sealed capsule or solid structure, preventing the radioactive substance from being released under normal operating conditions.

A sealed source is classified as a HASS source when its level of radioactivity (activity) exceeds the threshold values defined in the EU Basic Safety Standards Directive (BSSD 2013). These thresholds are compared against activity levels specified for each radionuclide. If a radionuclide is not specifically listed, the so-called D-values defined by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are applied. 

Not all radioactive shipments are necessarily HASS sources. HASS (High Activity Sealed Source) is only one subcategory of radioactive material transport. For a sealed source to be classified as a HASS source, its activity level must exceed the threshold values defined by applicable legislation.
